Challenge
The client, a global leader in energy technology, helps its customers win with data. Yet its own internal data capabilities were holding it back. The company's existing data platform and infrastructure couldn't scale to deliver the real-time insights the business needed to operate effectively.
A core problem was its materials data. With over 30 million distinct items, the dataset was plagued by poor quality issues and was difficult to search. This wasn't just an inconvenience; it created significant cost leakage across the enterprise. The unreliable data hampered crucial functions like tracking inventory, maintaining supply chain visibility, and on-time performance for its customers. To accelerate its own digital transformation, the client needed to overhaul its data foundation.
Solution
Our team of data experts partnered with the client to define a new future-state architecture and operating model. As well as proposing the plan, we deployed a multi-disciplinary team of master data management (MDM), data quality, and engineering specialists to execute it.
Our team delivered a comprehensive overhaul of the company's data ecosystem:
End-to-end architecture: We designed a new data architecture to ensure the smooth, effective management of data across key business value streams
Data quality: We performed rapid data profiling and generated quality rules to address data inconsistency.
Redefined the process for creating data products: The process for creating core data products, including well, wellbore, and materials, was completely reengineered for accuracy and efficiency
Intelligent MDM implementation: We implemented the Tamr AI-centric MDM platform to master well and materials data, ensuring it was reliable increasing reliability for all downstream consumption
- Accessible data marketplace: A new data marketplace, built on Databricks' Unity Catalog, was created to enable rapid search and access to vital Mmaterials data and documents
- Leadership visibility: We enabled a new financial planning and analysis (FP&A) dashboard to surface over 150 key performance indicators directly to business leaders
Impact
The transformation moved the client from a state of siloed, inconsistent data to a modern, coordinated data capability. The impact was swift and substantial.
By increasing visibility into key financial metrics, the company eliminated approximately $35 million in revenue leakage. The new framework enables rapid, cost-efficient data operations with quick prototyping, fostering a fail-fast mentality that accelerates innovation.
Beyond the financial gains, the project established a new standard for data governance. Formal data owner and governance roles were created across the product and consumer business units and data operations (enablers), and employees were equipped with the latest data skills. Proactive data quality management now supports informed decision-making at every level.
The scalable Lakehouse architecture, powered by Databricks, enables faster time-to-value and helps the company adapt to future business needs without another major re-architecture.
As well as laying a data foundation that supports innovation, the company has reengineered its operational backbone to build a competitive edge. It can now take proactive, data-driven decisions to help it navigate the complexities of the global energy market.
